Clarify clay brick, concrete shapes and exterior use.

Know what the material name means

Clay paving brick and concrete pavers are different manufactured materials. Compare the actual product, rated use and installation instructions instead of treating the shape as proof of composition.

  • Herringbone, running-bond and basketweave layouts
  • Simple contrasting borders
  • Physical samples to compare texture and variation

Select paving brick, not just a brick shape

Clay paving brick and brick-shaped concrete units have different composition and care requirements. Wall brick should not automatically be used as a walking or driving surface. Request the actual paving product information and intended exterior application. Surface texture, dimensions and thickness all affect the finished pattern, while the supporting system must suit pedestrians or vehicles as appropriate.

See the pattern at the real scale

Running bond, basketweave and herringbone each create a different rhythm. A border can contain the field visually, but the chosen sizes must work with cuts at doorways, curves and garage approaches. Compare several units to understand variation rather than selecting from one sample. Review both dry and wet appearance and the relationship to house brick or other nearby masonry.

Match care to the material

A cleaner intended for one paving product may not be appropriate for another. Identify the manufacturer and any existing coating before treating stains or surface residue. Aggressive washing can disturb joints; an unsuitable sealer can change the finish. Retain the product name and some matching units where practical so future maintenance and repairs do not depend on guessing what was installed.

Questions worth asking

Before the project begins.

Are all red rectangular pavers clay brick?

No. Concrete pavers can also be shaped and colored like brick. Ask for the material and product name rather than relying on the silhouette or color.

Can house bricks be used for a patio?

Do not assume so. Exterior paving needs units intended for that exposure and use, together with a suitable installation. Confirm the supplier specifications before repurposing masonry products.
